Description of Artwork: Kentucky artist GUY KEMPER installed a signature, 45-foot glass wall at the St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport as part of a larger renovation airport project. The airport’s renovation includes expanded departure gate areas, reconfigured passenger screening checkpoints, and the addition of passenger loading bridges. The bridges provides shelter and access for passengers walking from the terminal onto the planes, avoiding adverse weather conditions.
Kemper’s artwork is integrated into the design of the airport’s renovation, and consists of a glass “curtain” interior wall separating the landside terminal area from the security screening area. The finished glass installation measures 6 feet in height and over 45 feet in length. The artist’s concept behind the abstract design of the glass curtain is based on our local Pinellas County landscape -- a meeting of land, sky and water. The work details a blue horizon in the background and yellow brushstrokes with expressive white lines in the foreground. This warm, vibrant wall of color and light is immediately visible to arriving airport passengers, airport visitors awaiting arrivals, and to traveling passengers in line at the security screening area.
