Description of Artwork: The Boca Ciega Millennium Park project is a temporary project that is subject to both weathering and vandalism. As of February, 2009, a few of the sculptures have been removed (including the Lizard and Pinecone Woman). You can contact the park at 727-588-4882 for up-to-date park information and the status of this sculpture innstallation.
Titled "Wild Life Sculpture Search", the artwork consists of six sculptures/groups of sculptures; the imagery centers on "nature spirits." These creatures are installed along the West Loop of the boardwalk trail, observable from the boardwalk, but not obviously, thus creating an intentional or provocative sculpture search. This "search" is designed to encourage the observer to take closer notice of the real world environment of the park. The artwork imagery relates to nature or earth spirits and invokes stylized mythological images that often combine human characteristics into other animal forms. The sculptures are primarily made of plaster and are anticipated to age to the point where they will be removed from the park in future years. Because of the temporal nature of this artwork, the artist is also producing a booklet and documentary film to more permanently capture this work and the artist's engagement with the community.
