The Belleair Causeway Bridge
Public Art Commission awarded to Eureka, Illinois artist Bob Emser
Anticipated Installation Date: 2009
Description of Proposed Artwork: Sculptor BOB EMSER, from Eureka, Illinois, was selected to design, construct and install three translucent, lighted sculptures on each side of the Belleair Causeway Bridge which is currently under construction. The artwork will consist of one 24 feet high gateway sculpture on the east (land side) of the bridge, and two 9 foot-high sculptures on the west (beach side) of the bridge. The artist is working with construction materials which include a stainless steel and aluminum framework encased in a translucent, polycarbonate plastic surface material. The sculptures are intended to glow internally at night – almost as entrance and exit ‘beacons’ on the bridge. The curves, tent-like structures will references nautical forms, much like sails on a sailboat, in addition to reflecting the curved design of the bridge itself. The work is currently untitled.
